Zinc and immune resilience
Zinc helps immune cells stay ready when demand is high.
Zinc is required for the development and function of virtually every type of immune cell. It is essential for the maturation of immune cells that target specific threats and immune cells that produce antibodies in the thymus and bone marrow, for the activity of virus-fighting immune cells, for the oxidative burst of white blood cells that attack bacteria that destroys bacteria, and for the production of interferon, the virus-alarm protein that tells uninfected cells to prepare their defences against viral invasion. At a molecular level, zinc is a structural component of over 300 enzymes and a regulatory factor in more than 2000 transcription factors. Its role in immunity is not peripheral. It is central to the biological machinery that immune responses run on.
What is happening
Zinc deficiency is more common than most people assume. Mild to moderate deficiency, defined as blood levels below optimal but above clinical deficiency thresholds, is estimated to affect around 17 percent of the global population and a higher proportion in populations eating predominantly plant-based diets, since zinc bioavailability from plant sources is lower than from meat and seafood due to phytate content in legumes and grains. Vegetarians and vegans require approximately 50 percent more dietary zinc than omnivores to achieve equivalent absorption. Common symptoms of mild zinc deficiency include recurrent infections, slow wound healing, altered taste and smell, and white spots on fingernails, none of which are specific enough to confirm deficiency without testing.
The evidence for zinc supplementation as a support during illness is most robust for zinc lozenges at the onset of a cold, specifically zinc acetate or zinc gluconate formulations dissolved slowly in the mouth. A Cochrane review analysed trials of zinc lozenges initiated within 24 hours of cold symptoms and found a significant reduction in cold duration of approximately one to two days, with higher doses producing larger effects. The proposed mechanism is direct inhibition of the cold virus multiplying in your throat and nasal passages. Swallowed zinc tablets, zinc in gummy form and zinc as part of a general multivitamin do not achieve the local concentration in the upper respiratory tract that produces this effect. The lozenge format and early initiation are both required for the clinical benefit observed in trials.
What to do next
For ongoing immune support rather tha support, daily zinc intake from food or a low-dose supplement of 10 to 15 milligrams maintains the immune functions that zinc supports without the gastrointestinal side effects that higher doses can produce. Rich dietary sources include oysters, which contain more zinc per serving than any other food, red meat, chicken, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds and cashews. A diet consistently including these foods provides adequate zinc for most people. During high-demand periods, particularly in winter or during seasons of high illness exposure, a low-dose zinc supplement alongside a zinc-rich diet provides a consistent buffer against the depletion that sustained immune activation causes.
