What deep sleep repairs for better

Deep sleep repairs more than tiredness can explain.

Slow-wave sleep, the deepest stage of non-dream-stage sleep, looks passive from the outside. Brain waves slow to their lowest frequency. The body is largely still. But the physiological activity happening during this stage is more intensive than almost any other period of the 24-hour cycle. Growth hormone is released in its largest pulse of the day. The immune system activates and produces immune signalling proteins that coordinate immune surveillance and repair. Protein synthesis in muscle tissue peaks. The glymphatic system, a waste clearance network that runs through the brain, becomes far more active, flushing metabolic byproducts including the proteins associated with neurodegenerative disease.

What is happening

Memory consolidation also happens during deep sleep, but differently from dream-stage sleep. Slow-wave sleep preferentially consolidates declarative memory, the factual and procedural information you've accumulated during the day, transferring it from short-term hippocampal storage to longer-term cortical networks. A night of poor deep sleep doesn't just make you feel unrefreshed. It can reduce how much of the previous day’s learning and experience is retained the next morning.

Slow-wave sleep is front-loaded in the night. Your first two sleep cycles contain the majority of your deep sleep for the night. If you go to bed measurably later than usual, or if something disrupts the first few hours of sleep, you lose a disproportionate amount of your deep sleep rather than losing time evenly from all stages. This is why a 6-hour night is not simply 75 percent of an 8-hour night. It's a night with far less deep sleep and all the repair processes that depend on it.

What to do next

Alcohol, large meals close to bedtime, and high stress all suppress deep sleep. Not by reducing total sleep time but by altering sleep architecture so that lighter stages dominate and deep sleep is crowded out. You can spend eight hours in bed and wake up feeling unrested because the stage that drives physical and cognitive restoration never ran at the depth or duration it needed to.
