Stretching before bed for better
Gentle stretching can help the body cool into sleep.
Your body needs to drop its core temperature by around one degree Celsius to initiate sleep. That's not a preference. It's a physiological requirement. The drop signals to your brain that the conditions for sleep are met and triggers melatonin release and a shift in brain wave activity toward the patterns of sleep onset. Anything that raises your core temperature in the hour before bed, including intense exercise, hot food, or a stimulating conversation, delays that drop and delays sleep with it.
What is happening
Slow stretching produces the opposite effect. During gentle movement, blood flow increases to the skin and extremities. That increased peripheral circulation carries heat away from your core and dissipates it at the surface, which accelerates the core temperature drop that sleep onset requires. It is the same logic behind a warm bath before bed: warming draws blood to the surface, and the later cooling supports the temperature drop associated with sleep onset.
The nervous system effect compounds this. Slow, deliberate stretching, particularly when paired with controlled breathing and held for 30 to 60 seconds per position, activates the rest-and-repair nervous system through the same pathways that breathwork targets. Tension in muscles that have been held in static positions all day, a common pattern for both desk workers and people on their feet in service roles, keeps a low level of physical arousal running that competes with sleep onset. Releasing that tension through stretching removes a friction point that most people don't identify as a sleep problem because it doesn't feel like stress.
What to do next
Ten to 15 minutes is enough. Focus on the muscles at the front of your hips, hamstrings, lower back, and shoulders, the areas that accumulate the most tension during a typical working day. Do it slowly, breathe through it, and keep the room dim. The combination of temperature regulation, the body's rest-and-repair response, and tension release produces measurably better sleep quality within the first week of consistency for most people who try it.
