What dehydration does to you
Hydration is about electrolytes, not just water.
Most people think about hydration in terms of how much water they drink. The actual measure of whether your body is hydrated is whether your cells are holding the fluid they've absorbed. That depends on electrolyte concentration, not water volume alone. Sodium, potassium, and magnesium are what allow your cells to draw in and retain water. Without adequate levels of all three, you can drink large amounts and still remain functionally dehydrated.
What is happening
Urine colour is the most practical way to monitor your status in real time. Pale yellow indicates good hydration. Clear urine often signals that you're overhydrated or electrolyte diluted, which can be as problematic as dehydration during prolonged physical output. Dark yellow or amber means you're behind and need to catch up with both water and electrolytes, not just one of them.
Timing your electrolyte intake makes a significant difference to its effectiveness. Starting your day with electrolytes before breakfast, especially after overnight fluid loss, sets your baseline for the hours ahead. Taking another during or after physical activity replaces what sweat has removed. Waiting until thirst becomes strong means you're already in deficit. Thirst is a delayed signal that lags behind actual dehydration by up to an hour under exertion.
What to do next
The practical target is 2.5 to 3.5 litres of total fluid daily across most active lifestyles, with electrolytes distributed through the day rather than consumed all at once. Consistent hydration doesn't just affect physical performance. It's one of the primary drivers of cognitive clarity, mood stability, and how well you recover between sessions or demanding workdays.
