Shift work can scramble hunger before willpower is involved.
Ghrelin and leptin, the hormones that signal hunger and fullness, follow a body clock pattern. When your shift pattern rotates, those signals get out of sync with your actual energy needs. Setting consistent meal times relative to your shift start, regardless of whether you feel hungry, keeps your metabolic system more stable and helps reduce the risk of the erratic eating patterns that lead to energy crashes and weight gain over time.
Protein is the most important macronutrient to prioritise on rotating shifts. It's the most satiating, the most stable in terms of blood sugar impact, and the most important for maintaining muscle mass when sleep and recovery are inconsistent. Shift workers who anchor each meal around a protein source tend to report more stable energy and fewer cravings than those who rely on carbohydrate-heavy convenience food.

A multivitamin taken consistently, regardless of shift, closes the micronutrient gaps that form when eating patterns are irregular. Magnesium and B vitamins are the two most commonly depleted in shift workers and the two most directly linked to the fatigue and mood disruption that rotating schedules cause.
