Double shifts have a cost that builds after the midpoint.
The first four to six hours of a double shift run on the cortisol that peaked in the morning. Alertness is reasonable, physical capacity is near normal, and the body is drawing on your muscles' stored fuel stores that are reasonably full at the start of the day. Most people feel capable in this window, which can create a false sense of how the rest of the shift will go. The body is not in a stable state. It's burning through reserves that won't be replaced until the shift ends.
What is happening
Around hours seven to ten, blood sugar becomes the primary variable. If eating has been irregular or skipped, glucose supply to the brain drops and cognitive performance begins to decline. This is the window when errors cluster, when emotional regulation becomes harder, and when the decisions that require judgment get made worse. The physical fatigue in this period isn't just muscular. It's also metabolic. The body is signalling that the fuel running the shift is running low.
The final four to six hours run on a combination of willpower and stress hormones. Cortisol has been elevated for hours trying to compensate for fatigue. Adrenaline is doing some of the work of maintaining alertness. The physical load on your feet, back, and joints is cumulative and unrelieved. Cognitive shortcuts increase because the part of your brain that handles decisions and focus is genuinely fatigued. This is when the highest proportion of workplace incidents, mistakes, and difficult interactions occur, not because the people involved are less competent, but because this is exactly what a double shift does to the body.
What to do next
Recovery from a double shift takes longer than most people expect or plan for. A single night of sleep doesn't clear the cortisol debt, the muscle glycogen deficit, or the physical wear from 16 hours of standing and moving. Two recovery sleep cycles, ideally with protein-led eating and minimal alcohol, is a more realistic timeline for returning to a baseline that feels normal.
